This scheme proposes a contemporary barn of flexible living and working space as an extension to an existing cottage in rural Oxfordshire. Using a restrained palette of local materials the project develops the barn typology to create an adaptable volume with very low embodied energy.
The new building creates a perfect model for a contemporary low carbon house in a sensitive historic location. Thick limestone walls provide thermal mass for heat storage and are highly insulated to minimise heating requirements.
The space between the buildings creates a sheltered warm courtyard for outside living with a new glazed link allowing heat capture and distribution to both old and new elements of construction.
